What is Astrology?

Astrology is perhaps the first psychology, describing personality and behaviour based upon the position of the planets at birth. Astrology explains the different ways of being and of relating, as well as communication styles, motivations and manner of doing things. Astrology highlights talents and tensions, strengths and inner conflicts. When the fate of a society was dependant upon the of the character king or emperor, knowing that individuals potential strengths and weaknesses was crucial. At first birth charts were only done for rulers. Later on it became available to all. In India today, a birth chart is routinely made for births and to match marriage partners.

What Astrology is Not

Astrology is not a way of predicting the future in specifics. A look at transits provides general types of possible outcomes, based upon both the characteristics of the birth chart and the foundation of choices the person has made to date. Even then the unexpected can and does happen. Astrology can give insight as to when this is most likely to happen.

Astrology does not condemn a person to be a certain way or to have a predetermined life. Astrology cannot say who will be the criminal and who the police. Though Astrology shows that the charts of both often have similar chart patterns and thus may find themselves interacting with each other. Psychologists and their clients also can have similar Astrological configurations.Astrology is able to point out where interests may lie as in the above examples.

What Happens in an Astrological session?

In the first session, the birth chart is interpreted and a basic character or personality picture is developed. The positions of the Sun, Moon and the rising sign are thoroughly examined, followed by the other planets. The different areas of life such as career, relationships, home and family, spiritual searching, etc. are looked at with emphasis on those areas of most interest to the client. Following the lead of the client, the session moves to issues, concerns or questions to explore in more depth.

In the same session or in a subsequent one, the positions of the planets now are added to the birthchart to give an Astrological 'weather forecast' for the year ahead. What opportunities is Jupiter offering? Where is the sometimes difficult reality check of Saturn focused on now and when will it be over? Are any of the transpersonal planets of Uranus, Neptune and Pluto bringing once in a lifetime energies of change and growth? This is called an Update.

Sometimes Astrology is used to set an auspicious date for a wedding or the opening of a business.
